party : a colourful easter brunch & hunt

First of all, it’s been so long. I know, I know. And I know that both Rachel & I have been missing the blog – and hope to find more time to blog in the coming months! Between a new baby and a lot of work stress, House of Colour had to be set to the side… but just for a season!

I’m happy to break the silence today with a post about the Easter brunch & egg hunt that our mom hosted. Our cousin, Ali, stepped in to help with crafting, decor, florals, etc. She did such a wonderful job!

So without further ado…

This weekend, House of Colour + the incredible talents of our cousin Ali styled a colourful Easter brunch & egg hunt.

We used Paperless Post for our invitations – they have great & inexpensive designs for online invitations.

Invite

The invitation inspired the colour scheme for the florals & all the party decor. We created a colourful pennant garland & archway to greet guests as they entered.

The real show-stoppers were the floral arrangements. We used our family favorite, Lyal Nickals, to get cut flowers in our colour palate & arranged them in ribbon-wrapped glass vessels. We also scattered a few dyed eggs – what’s Easter without dyed eggs?

You may have noticed those sweet little egg bouquets… we saw Fleuritica’s egg cup tutorial on Pinterest & loved the idea!

Other decorative touches included LOTS of hanging honeycomb eggs,  paper-mache eggs, bunnies & carrots on stakes and more!

home & garden : sad couch, happy couch!

The little things can make the biggest difference!  We’ve had this couch in our family room that has needed some love for awhile.  This weekend I decided to change things up and make this sad couch a happy couch!

I already had the golden yellow & grey pillow on the left, as well as the purple throw blanket.  The other two pillows I snagged at Target this weekend.  I just love the way our colorful, happy couch looks now!  What a difference!

party : easter

Hope you all had a wonderful Easter!  We certainly did!  Here are some snapshots from the day & the tablescape we put together for our family affair!

There were 13 of us this year, so we utilized a 6′ table to make one big T-shaped table!  The two tablecloths are actually different, but their golden color ties them together.  Purple, yellow and white flowers accented the center and my mother’s china adorned each place setting.

. . . & no party is complete without hors d’oeuvres!

Easter was so much fun and what made it even more special was that Sarah & I realized it was the one year anniversary of our blog’s inception!  Remember last year’s post?

party : bee housewarming party

IMG_6428

Yesterday’s party was a blast!  We had the honor of helping our grandma throw a housewarming at her new nest.  It was loads of fun to decorate!  Below are some photos from the bee-themed event!

As you arrived, you were greeted by a sweet hand-illustrated chalkboard and the sounds of some of the best big-band leaders, like Artie Shaw, Duke Ellington, and Glenn Miller.

The colors were white, yellow and turqoise.  We made simple arrangements of billy buttons in tall vases that were wrapped in chicken wire to resemble honeycomb.  Ribbons around the vases were made from spools of old clothing labels that came from our grandparent’s clothing store, The Colony.  We wanted to incorporate elements from The Colony to go with our theme, since it has been a big part of our family.

A classic paper chain bedecked the outdoor patio, while a wall of tissue paper poufs adorned the inside.

The original sign from the clothing store served as a backdrop to the buffet.

Honeycomb from Berkeley Bowl and honey sticks from the San Leandro Farmer’s Market.

We thought it turned out pretty sweet!  Stay tuned for updates on the upcoming wedding we are styling!

garden : palette

IMG_6246

This weekend I spent some wonderful time gardening in my front yard.  I filled the bed underneath the kitchen window with all kinds of plants and a wisteria vine that came from my parent’s Victorian farmhouse.  I wanted the flowers to be in the same palette as the lovely purple wisteria, so I chose several lavender bushes, but also accented them with pops of yellow and white.

I can’t wait until they are mature and fill the bed with their foliage and flowers!
